How does Electricity Advisor work?
Emerald Electricity Advisor reads the flashing light on the front of your compatible electricity smart meter and, through Bluetooth, securely sends real-time electricity usage data straight to your smartphone or device. How? The Electricity Advisor reads the flashing Impulse light on your Smart Meter and can interpret these "flashes" as 'data' onto your Emerald App.
Since it uses Bluetooth, your Electricity Advisor will automatically connect whenever your phone or tablet is in bluetooth range (around 10 metres) of your smartphone, giving you up-to-date insights on your energy use.
Top Tip: You can connect multiple devices in your home to the Electricity Advisor! For the best experience, pair it with a tablet or device that typically stays in the house, within 10 metres of your Electricity Advisor, so you’re always connected.

Is Electricity Advisor compatible with all electricity meters ?
Emerald Electricity Advisor can be installed on most smart (digital) electricity meters. View compatibile smart meters.
However, it is Electricity Advisor is not compatible with older electricity meters that use manual or spinning disk technology.
How to check if your Smart meter is compatible
The Electricity Advisor reads the flashing “impulse” light on your Smart Meter, which translates the flashes into data on your Emerald App. Most compatible smart meters will flash when your property is using electricity from the grid and stop flashing when it isn’t (including when power comes from your solar or battery system).
For properties without solar
- Check your smart meter when electricity is in use. If the Impulse Light flashes while power is running, your meter is compatible.
- If the Impulse Light does not flash while power is running, your meter is not compatible.
For properties with solar
- Check when solar is not running (e.g., at night): The Impulse Light should flash when power is in use. If it doesn’t, your meter is not compatible.
- Check when solar is running (e.g., during a sunny day): The Impulse Light should not flash while your electricity runs on solar power. If it does, your meter is not compatible with the Electricity Advisor.
Note: If you have a battery system, it may affect the Impulse Light results.
How can Electricity Advisor save money?
Electricity Advisor provides real-time insights into your electricity usage, allowing you to spot high-energy times and adjust habits to lower costs.
With this data, you can make informed decisions, like running appliances during off-peak hours or identifying areas where you can cut back.
Over time, these adjustments add up, helping you reduce energy bills and manage your home’s efficiency more effectively.
What’s the difference between Electricity Advisor and LiveLink?
Electricity Advisor and LiveLink each offer unique benefits, but whether you need both depends on your goals. Electricity Advisor provides real-time insights into your energy usage directly from your smart metre, helping you understand and manage your consumption.
