Certificates
An introduction to energy certificates for businesses
Financial incentives for businesses that choose efficiency
State & national government incentive schemes are designed to lower carbon emissions and accelerate Australia’s transition towards net zero by 2050.
They provide financial incentives to home and business owners to encourage the use of energy efficient technologies – through certificate creation.
What are energy certificates for businesses?
Energy certificates for businesses, like Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are essentially tradable credits issued to businesses that implement eligible energy saving projects or renewable energy systems.
Certificates are designed to offset the cost of sustainable upgrades by allowing businesses to trade these credits, helping to make energy-efficient practices more accessible and affordable.
Available certificates, state by state
Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)
Discounts on energy-saving products for Victorian homes and businesses.
NSW Energy Saving Scheme (ESS)
Financial incentives for NSW households and businesses.
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
Incentives that reduce upfront installation costs.
Peak Reduction Certificate (PRCs)
Tradable energy certificates.
Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS)
Financial incentives for households and businesses in SA.
*Rebates are subject to terms and conditions. They are dependent on the product purchased and install scenario. Speak to your accredited installer for more information
Working with an Accredited Provider (AP)
Navigating certificate creation often involves working with an Accredited Provider (AP). APs are authorised to help businesses manage the certificate creation process, ensuring compliance and maximising potential returns.
Here’s how the AP partnership typically works:
Assess eligibility
AP’s evaluate your planned upgrades to see if they qualify for certificates under programs like the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) or NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS).
Coordinate installation and compliance
They guide you in installing compliant, eligible technologies and ensure all necessary documentation is met for certificate issuance.
Create and trade certificates
Once your upgrade is complete, the AP generates the certificates on your behalf, which can then be sold or traded to offset the cost of your project or create additional revenue.

Who qualifies for government certification?
In Australia, various government energy efficiency schemes offer certifications and incentives to businesses that implement approved energy-saving technologies. Eligibility typically extends to a wide range of entities, including sole traders, merchants, project-based firms, and energy retailers.
To determine your business's eligibility and understand the specific requirements, it's advisable to consult the guidelines of the relevant state or territory energy efficiency scheme. Emerald collaborates closely with these programs to ensure our products meet the necessary standards, facilitating your participation in such initiatives.
