As someone who spends a lot of time around innovative energy solutions, I can tell you that hot water heat pumps are one of the smartest and most efficient ways to heat water in your home. If you’ve ever wondered, “How does a hot water heat pump work?” think of it like a fridge—but running in reverse. Curious? Let me break it down in four simple steps
How a hot water heat pump works in 4 steps

1 . The heat pump’s fan draws in air from outside.
2. Heat is extracted from the air and transferred to a coil.
3. The coil wraps around the water tank, heating the water as it circulates.
4. This process repeats until the water is nice and hot.
It sounds pretty straightforward, right? But if you’re looking for something a bit more technical, we’ve got you covered.
A deeper dive into how a hot water heat pump works
- First, the fan pulls in air from outside into the evaporator.
- In the evaporator, a refrigerant fluid absorbs the heat from the air, causing it to turn from a liquid into a gas.
- This gas is compressed, making it hotter and more pressurised.
- The now hot gas flows through a coil wrapped around the water tank, transferring heat to the water.
- As the refrigerant loses heat, it cools down and changes back into a liquid.
- The cooled refrigerant is passed through an expansion valve, where it depressurises and cools even more before heading back to the evaporator to start the process again.

@emeraldaustralia The easiest way to describe how a Heat Pump works is like ‘a fridge’ but in reverse. This is a great analogy, but what does it mean? In our latest blog we simplify this process by explaining it in two simple steps.
